How to Know If Long Distance Is Right for You

By Chelsea Gilmore on April 25, 2017

I am currently in a long distance relationship. One question I get a lot is “how do you make it work?”

Well, for starters long distance is not for the faint of heart. Some people automatically assume long distance doesn’t work. I, however, strongly disagree. If you go into a long distance relationship with that mindset, then yes, I would say nine times out of 10 it won’t work.

From my experience it is very difficult, but being long distance has its advantagesPeople do long distance for various reasons. When you feel you’re not sure if long distance is the right move for you, here are some things to ask when long distance starts to seem tough.

Do you communicate?

If the answer is yes then you’re off to a good start. Communication is key in any relationship (however cliche). With long distance you will constantly be texting, skyping, snapchatting, etc. Technology is a great way to keep connected and make talking to your S/O easier.

Value social networking and its advantages when it comes to long distance. Be aware of the amount of time you will spend talking and make time for it. Also keep in mind how much traveling is involved. Driving overnight for one weekend together happens frequently.

Do you trust them?

Trust is probably the most important thing when doing long distance. You are constantly worrying about what your girlfriend/boyfriend is doing. You can’t keep tabs on them. Who are they talking to? Who are they with? Why aren’t they answering your messages?

Ultimately trust can make or break this type of relationship. Be aware of the pitfalls and try to understand your partner feels the same. Know their intentions and who they are as a person to determine if long distance is right for your relationship.

Can you see a future with them?

If you see a future with your S/O then I would say go for it. Long distance can bring you closer as a couple. Don’t settle and don’t force long distance. Be sure you love this person and find yourself planning a future together. Otherwise the work of a long distance relationship will go to waste.

Talk it through before making the change. It is an adjustment but long distance can also teach you to be independent.

Minor details matter in a long distance relationship. So be honest, don’t be distant, and have a goal in mind. Honesty relates to how you trust, being distant can be a sign of growing apart, and having an end goal will be what gets you through the time spent being long distance.

The final question would be do you love them? If you are willing to go to the ends of the earth for this person, then distance won’t matter when someone means so much to you.
